ProbeFix Dynamic T Used in ESA Study Simulating Lunar Gravity During Parabolic Flights

Researchers from FH Aachen used Usono’s ProbeFix Dynamic T during ESA’s 88th Parabolic Flight Campaign to study muscle behavior under simulated lunar gravity. Learn how Dutch innovation contributes to space research and healthcare.

Dutch Medical Technology Supports ESA Research on Lunar Gravity
During the 88th European Space Agency (ESA) Parabolic Flight Campaign, Kirsten Albracht, Verena Schüngel, Dr. Bjoern Braunstein and colleagues from FH Aachen successfully used Usono’s technology to study muscle fascicle behavior under simulated lunar gravity.

The Research Context
Parabolic flights create short periods of reduced gravity by flying in a specific arc pattern. For lunar gravity simulation, the aircraft achieves approximately one-sixth of Earth’s gravity – the same conditions astronauts experience on the Moon. These unique conditions allow scientists to investigate how human muscles function in space environments.

The Role of ProbeFix Dynamic T
To capture accurate ultrasound images during these changing gravity conditions, the research team used ProbeFix Dynamic T, an ultrasound probe holder designed to maintain stability during movement. Conventional handheld ultrasound methods are highly sensitive to probe shifts, which can distort images. ProbeFix Dynamic T ensures consistent, clear imaging even when gravity changes rapidly.

The FH Aachen team shared the following feedback:

“ProbeFix Dynamic T was incredibly helpful for our Moonwalk research project and made the setup of the ultrasound probe during the parabolic flights both quick and effortless. We truly appreciated how reliable and easy to use it was.”

Broader Impact
This research contributes to understanding muscle behavior in space, which is essential for astronaut health during long missions. Insights gained may also inform solutions for muscle atrophy on Earth, such as in aging or prolonged bed rest. Beyond space research, ProbeFix technology is widely used in sports medicine and physiotherapy to enable dynamic ultrasound imaging during real movement and rehabilitation.
